Covid & ISO Health Informatics Experience & Telehealth Services
Resources and policies will decide the direction for telehealth in the future during the COVID-19 epidemic. Flinders University conducted an investigation to survey health professionals about their experiences using Telehealth during COVID-19. Telehealth services, which permit doctors or clinicians to connect via phone or on the internet with patients, were supported by Australia's government during the beginning stages of. This was done to lower the chance of spreading infectious illnesses. This particular service is beneficial to rural and remote areas, where access to physical medicine services might be difficult.

Flinders University researchers Dr Paul Ward Dr. Hailay Absrha Geosesew , Prof. Anthony Maeder Professor Hailay Absrha Gesesew and Dr Alan Taylor conducted a survey of 91 health professionals to evaluate their experiences using the use of telehealth. According to the clinicians they found positive aspects to include the legalization of telehealth services as a form of service as well as increased confidence in the provision of the service , and increased the financial and human resources.

"While many practitioners believed that the transition to telehealth occurred because of the pandemic," said Dr Alan Taylor (a lead researcher at Flinders University who is also a member of the Australian Telehealth Society Committee).

Dr. Taylor said that it is difficult to determine whether telehealth will be maintained after the pandemic. Future funding for telehealth could also be affected by this complex mixture of policy and the clinical practice. Dr Alan Taylor led a project that created an international standard in Telehealth services. International Standards Organization Health Informatics Committee published a new ISO International Organization for Standardization Standard. It was called ISO 13131.2021 Health Informatics- Telehealth services- Quality guidelines for planning. See the ISO 13131:2021 Health informatics -- Telehealth services -- Quality planning guidelines doc here.

Dr Taylor stated that international standards are an important part of world trade in goods, services, and with the increasing use of telehealth services, it is crucial to maintain the quality of telehealth services subject to ISO/TR 11633-2:2021 Health informatics-Information security management for remote maintenance of medical devices and medical information systems. The guidelines are of immense assistance to healthcare providers (including primary medical doctors) who wish to utilize methods of risk management to establish standards for quality and establish protocols for operating telehealth service.
